This course covers the Terrestrial and Coastal Navigation methods required for an Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch level license. The course includes chart introduction, aids to navigation, compass corrections by azimuth and amplitude, relative bearings, latitude and longitude, navigational tools, methods for determining position, dead reckoning, estimated position, current and leeway, running fix, bearings, great circle routes, tides and currents and electronic charts.

(This STCW course is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Dominica Maritime Administration.)

This course does NOT cover Electronic Navigation.

USCG
Any applicant who has successfully completed your Terrestrial & Coastal Navigation (Blended) (NOREMI-982) course will satisfy the competency requirements of Table A-II/1 of the STCW, as amended 2010, and NVIC 12-14 (Ch-4), for Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on Vessels of 500 GT or More and will satisfy the training requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)4)(viii); The following Tasks from NVIC 12-14 (Ch-4): 1.2.A, 1.2.B, 1.2.C, 1.3.A, 1.3.B, 1.3.C, 1.6.A, 1.6.B, 1.6.C, and 1.6.D.

Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed Task Control Sheets for these assessments in application for STCW certification.


Dominica

The course is approved as meeting the competency requirements of Table A-II/I of the STCW, as amended 2010 for Terrestrial Navigation.

Assessments

Written Examination

This course consists of two written exams:

  • Terrestrial and Coastal Navigation Theory Exam: This exam contains 25 questions and requires a 70% passing score.
  • Terrestrial and Coastal Navigation Plotting Exam: This exam contains 10 questions and requires a 90% passing score.

The written exams can be taken online through HALO° Exams. You will receive 3 attempts for each exam. If you fail all 3 attempts of an exam, you must pay a retake fee of $25.00 for that exam.
